You've more than likely already heard of the Club of Rome. Those who haven't, can read about them here. This honourable and non-profit making
group, published the study 'The limits to Growth' in 1972. In a nutshell, it maintains, that the Earth cannot handle the increasing world-population and its demands for very much longer. The earlier we leave the path of
growth, the less painful the crossover to a sustainable economy will be.
In the meantime, even the Audi A1 can be had with all-wheel drive. |
This, for the first time, is where the, nowadays so inflationary concept of sustainability is defined. As an example, to illustrate this, we'll use the fishing industry, which must be prevented from over-fishing the oceans. The
earlier one introduces fishing-quotas, the less stringent they can be. That sounds plausible, however, over the last forty years, this has not led to a decisive change of thinking.
Indeed, it's not politics or the economy that should be held responsible for this. Although our Federal Chancellor still considers growth to be the way to secure our prosperity. She probably knows more than we do, although
if she were to urgently preach the renunciation of growth, in 2017, she would almost certainly be able to enjoy the benefits of early retirement at 63 years old, something which her government introduced.
The compulsions of the industry can be seen quite clearly in the small collection of data seen above. These are the latest sales-figures from Audi. Those who buy Audis, do not, as a rule, suffer from financial difficulties,
thus, they have a free choice. One can further assume, that any vehicle manufacturer, will offer that which enjoys the greatest acceptance and brings in the highest profit. Particularly if they're listed on the stock exchange.
They don't really have any choice.
Now, have a quick look at what Audi is offering. The values in brackets mean, that this particular model can also be had with permanent all-wheel drive. You'll see, that the values, e.g., of the Q3, are all higher than those of
the two-wheel drive models. By the way, the Q3 and the Q5 only have one value each in front of the brackets, because there is only one model of each without all-wheel drive, the Q7 cannot even be had as an two-wheel
drive. Do you seriously believe, that that this would be the case if there was a high demand for such a model?
So, in the case of the Q3, the Q5 and the Q7, one can assume about 400.000 off-road vehicles. Conversely, the more economic cars, e.g., the A3, only sell about half as many vehicles. Albeit, one can only be astonished, at
how the fuel-guzzling habits of these monsters have been broken. Apart from a few of the seldom bought S-models, the figures are in fact, quite moderate. With the A8 e.g., which is only offered with all-wheel drive, the
impressive value of as little as 144 g/km is possible. Indeed, you can look at it whichever way you like: We ourselves decide, what kind of world we'll be giving over to our children. And in this case, which car you buy also
counts, or does it? 08/14
